I sat next to you
in faux, brown leather shoes.

I saved up my childhood
for real, copper pennies
that fit between small, pure fingers,
and hid in shallow pockets.

That I traded
for costly, imitation leather
to cover my large, worn feet
and disguise my deep regret.
